The Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR) project, initiated by TAT, seeks to elevate Thailand’s status as a sustainable destination. In collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Ministry of Public Health, this initiative enhances the sustainability framework across the Thai tourism sector, encouraging travel entities to engage deeply with economic, social, environmental, and governance aspects of sustainability.

The STAR project, building on the foundations laid by the Amazing Thailand Safety & Health Administration (SHA) certification, marks a shift in focus from pandemic-era health and safety to encompass a broader range of sustainability goals aligned with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). akyra Manor Chiang Mai's achievement of the 5-star rating highlights its comprehensive approach to sustainability, addressing critical areas such as climate action, peace, justice, and strong institutions, alongside fostering partnerships for achieving these goals.

This recognition comes when TAT spotlights Thailand’s shift towards high-value and sustainable tourism. The recent ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2024 in Vientiane, Lao PDR, served as a platform for TAT to underscore its commitment to quality and responsible tourism. The theme “Quality and Responsible Tourism – Sustaining ASEAN Future” resonates with TAT’s vision for a sustainable tourism future, emphasising the importance of meaningful travel experiences that respect and preserve Thailand’s rich cultural heritage and natural environment.

At the forum, Thailand showcased its sustainable tourism initiatives, including Thai massage demonstrations highlighting the country’s health and wellness expertise. The Thailand Stand, featuring key players in ASEAN tourism and connectivity, illustrated the country's dedication to offering travel experiences that cater to high-value tourists and prioritise sustainability and environmental stewardship.

TAT’s proactive approach to targeting higher-spending segments that value luxury, wellness, and eco-friendly practices underlines a strategic shift toward attracting tourists likely to contribute positively to the local economy while minimising their environmental footprint. Introducing the Thailand Tourism Awards’ new categories for Low-carbon and Sustainability further reinforces the nation’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable travel.

With over 28 million tourists welcomed in 2023 and a revenue target of 3 trillion baht for 2024, Thailand is on a path to recover post-pandemic and redefine its tourism sector as a beacon of sustainability and responsible travel. The recognition of akyra Manor Chiang Mai by the TAT STAR project heralds a new era for Thailand’s tourism industry, one where luxury and sustainability go hand in hand to offer unforgettable experiences that are both indulgent and environmentally conscious.
